Research Papers- From a professor’s perspective! When it comes to writing a research paper
So you are teaching your class about Roman history. You have taught them about the various upheavals throughout the history of the Roman Empire. They have been taught how extensive and wide spread the empire was. Now you want them to write a research paper on it.
However you know that almost every student irrespective of the IQ level is nervous when it comes to writing a research paper. How can you as their teacher help them turn in a well researched document?
Firstly understand that the fear psychosis of the students is because they are afraid to climb the mountain. Once you announce that they have to turn in a research on the Roman Empire, firstly set some ground rules.
Guide them on the structure- Show them a previous research article. Please do not show them an article on the topic they are supposed to research. The safe way to do this is to pick up an article at least 2 years old.
Length of the article- Decide on the type of article you want them to submit. Factor in the fact that they may be doing a similar exercise for other subjects also and also factor in the size of the class and the time you can spare to grade each paper thoroughly. Do not make it a small article. Instead ask for an article summarized in 2 pages. This will help you understand each student’s strength and weakness while making it easier for you to correct the article thoroughly.
Deadline- Fix a deadline which will ensure that the articles are submitted in time. Make it extremely clear that all articles submitted after the deadline will not be graded.
Topic- You should consult with your students and decide on 3 or 4 topics for the research. This will narrow the research to be done by the students thus saving them valuable time while increasing their confidence as they were able to have a say on which topics they can write on.
Sources- This is a big stumbling factor for all students. Once the topics are decided, provide them with sources then can refer to for research. Guide them where they can find these books and/or articles for their research. However always encourage them by asking them to search for any other sources on their own.
Plagiarism and online writing services- Clearly explain that any type of plagiarism will not be accepted. Also warn them against using online custom writing services, by explaining that this research is to enhance their knowledge of the topic and not just to get good grades.
Give them time slots- You should give them time slots where they can approach you and your teaching assistant for guidance.
Reviewing the preliminary work- Once the students start showing you the first drafts of the reports scan them and suggest course correction wherever needed. Do not dictate what they should write. Always keep reiterating the deadline. | custom essay writing service |
If you feel some students are not on track ask them to show you the revised draft within 2 days.
This will give the message that you will not accept poor quality work.
Insist that all students should show you the near final draft 7 days before the deadline and another one 2 days before the deadline. This will help your students turn in an article of high quality.
